Fulfillment Over Happiness

Have you found yourself chasing happiness, only to feel like it’s always out of reach? Despite your best efforts, do you feel discontent and unfulfilled? You might think the problem is you, and even criticize yourself for not measuring up to an elusive standard of happiness. Well - if this sounds familiar, you're not alone.

Our society is facing a mental health crisis. Despite increased awareness and efforts to promote mental wellness, rates of anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges are rising. So, if you are struggling - take this as your sign that there is absolutely nothing wrong with you (even if your mind tells you otherwise!).

Instead of chasing happiness, which can often leave us feeling discontent - how about we shift our focus to a more deeper, enduring state: fulfillment. Fulfillment isn’t about avoiding pain or discomfort; it’s about living a life aligned with your values and purpose - even in adversity. It’s about embracing the full spectrum of human experience—the highs and lows—and finding meaning in your journey. The journey toward fulfillment requires patience, perseverance, and a willingness to experience all that life has to offer, both pleasant and unpleasant. But it’s worth it. By focusing on fulfillment, we can build better lives - even amidst the pain.

Here are some practical steps to build more fulfillment in your life:

  1. Clarify Your Values: Reflect on what truly matters to you. What are your core values and priorities? How do you want to treat yourself, others, and the world? Aligning your actions with your values creates a more meaningful life.

  2. Practice Mindfulness: Mindfulness helps you stay present and engaged in your life. It allows you to fully connect with yourself, others and the world. When we are mindful, we are able to savour and appreciate the good times. And, during difficult times - we can stay present and focused on doing what is helpful (instead of getting consumed by our emotions!).

  3. Take Committed Action: Identify specific actions that align with your values and commit to them, even when it’s tough. Remember, fulfillment comes from living a life of purpose, not from chasing fleeting moments of happiness.

In a world obsessed with happiness, it’s time to redefine success and prioritize fulfillment. By accepting difficult thoughts and emotions and acting in line with your values, you can create a life that is rich, meaningful, and deeply fulfilling.

Stay tuned for more tools and resources to help you build a rich, full, and meaningful life!

All the best,

Jayne
