Why Positive Thinking Doesn’t Always Help

Our minds have evolved to think negatively. They are constantly worrying, comparing, criticizing, and assuming the worst. It is totally normal.
Many people will try to convince you that you can simply change your thought patterns. But this is not always true—at least, not in my experience.
Have you ever tried to stop worrying only to start feeling more anxious than before? By trying to convince your mind to stop worrying, you may then get anxiety about your anxiety!
Sometimes, the more we try to think differently, the more power we give to our thoughts. We can get stuck in a never-ending battle that leaves us feeling even worse than before.
We may not be able to control our thoughts. But that doesn’t mean they have to control us.
Imagine a world where...
We could allow ourselves to have all of our thoughts, without getting caught up in them.
We could create space for our thoughts, without letting them control us.
That is the power of acceptance.
Acceptance allows us to acknowledge our thoughts without getting entangled in them. It helps us create space for our thoughts to exist, without dictating our actions or emotions.
