What is Therapy, Anyways?
Hey there!
These days, there’s all kinds of hype around therapy. And while that is absolutely amazing - many people are still confused by what therapy is all about. Part of the confusion might stem from the fact that therapy isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. There are countless approaches and styles, and while there might not be a single "right way," there are definitely approaches that work better (or worse) for some people.
We’ve all seen those movie scenes of people sobbing on therapists' couches or heard people talk about their weekly venting sessions. Yes, therapy involves discussing our struggles, and it's perfectly normal if that brings up some emotions. And while a good therapist listens empathetically, therapy is much more than just talking. It is a collaborative process aimed at assessing problems, identifying strengths, and empowering you to set goals and take meaningful action to improve your life.
If you've had less-than-ideal experiences with therapy in the past or you're skeptical about whether or not therapy could work for you, you're not alone. It's important to recognize that therapists aren't just listeners—they're trained professionals equipped with practical tools to help you navigate life's challenges more effectively.
As a registered social worker (MSW,RSW) and therapist, my approach is grounded in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). I recognize that life is messy and my practice is all about helping people embrace life’s challenges, instead of fighting against them. My clients learn how to handle their thoughts and emotions more effectively - which allows them to find more freedom and fulfillment in their lives.
If you’re feeling stuck, consider giving ACT a try. It may be just what you need to improve your life! Reach out today and we can embark on this journey together.
All the best,
Jayne
